Spotify has announced a new “AI Persona” badge for certain artist profiles. The feature is intended to help listeners understand whether an artist’s identity may have been generated by artificial intelligence rather than representing a real person.

Spotify says the badge will begin appearing in mid-September. Users may see it on artist profile pages, in search results, and alongside tracks included in playlists.

The company said artists can disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona. Spotify may also review profiles and apply the label when it determines that an artist identity is AI-generated.

The new system is designed to give listeners more transparency as generative AI becomes increasingly common in music production and artist branding. Artificial intelligence can now generate vocals, lyrics, instrumental arrangements, cover art, and even fictional artist identities.

Spotify also said that tracks connected to AI Persona profiles will not normally be included in its editorial or algorithmic recommendations.

However, users may still discover and listen to those tracks through direct searches, artist follows, or saved music.

The announcement addresses a growing concern in the streaming industry: listeners may not always know whether the music they are hearing was created by a human artist, produced with AI assistance, or released under a completely synthetic identity.

By introducing a visible label, Spotify is attempting to create a clearer distinction between real artists and AI-generated artist personas. The company says the goal is to support trust and authenticity between artists and listeners.

The policy may also influence how other streaming platforms handle AI-generated music. As the amount of synthetic content increases, clear identification systems could become an important part of music discovery and platform governance.
